Domestic Oil Tanks for Heating Oil 
INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

It is the responsibility of the installer and tank owner to ensure that the following requirements are met. These are general installation instructions. For specific details and regulations, you must refer to the appropriate codes and local regulations.
 
1. THE INSTALLER SHALL ENSURE THAT ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL, PROVINCIAL & LOCAL CODES ARE MET PRIOR TO TANK INSTALLATION.
2. CONSULT AUTHORITIES HAVING JURISDICTION BEFORE INSTALLATION.
3. MAXIMUM LEG HEIGHT OF 254MM.
4. FOR BOTTOM OUTLET TANKS, PITCH TANK TOWARDS DRAIN AT LEAST 10MM PER 500MM TO PREVENT WATER COLLECTION IN THE TANK.
5. ALL UNUSED OPENINGS MUST BE FITTED WITH LIQUID TIGHT METAL CLOSURES BEFORE PUTTING TANK IN SERVICE.
6. DO NOT TRANSFER OIL FROM OLD TANK INTO THIS TANK.
7. OPEN SECONDARY CONTAINMENT TANKS TO BE USED INSIDE ONLY.
8. TANKS MUST BE VENTED OUTSIDE. VENT WILL FUNCTION AS NORMAL & EMERGENCY VENT
9. VERTICAL OBROUND DOUBLE BOTTOM TANK DESIGNS ARE EQUIPPED WITH AN INTERNAL MONITORING PIPE EXTENDING INTO THE INTERSTITIAL SPACE. THESE TANKS ARE EQUIPPED WITH A METAL DIPSTICK ATTACHED TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAP OF THE CONTAINMENT INSPECTION PORT. MONTHLY CHECKING OF THE INTERSTITIAL AREA USING THE DIPSTICK IS RECOMMENDED TO ENSURE THAT NO LEAKAGE OF THE PRIMARY TANK HAS OCCURED. IF OIL RESIDUE IS OBSERVED AT THE END OF THE DIPSTICK, THE TANK MUST BE TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE AND REPLACED. AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO DIPSTICK MONITORING, A FLOAT GAUGE CAN BE PURCHASED AT BMI FOR INTERSTITIAL TANK MONITORING.TANKS INSTALLED OUTDOORS MUST BE PAINTED WITH CORROSION RESISTANT PAINT UPON INSTALLATION.
10. TANKS INSTALLED OUTDOORS MUST BE PAINTED WITH CORROSION RESISTANT PAINT UPON INSULLATION.
11. FOR LONGEVITY, INSPECT FOR AND REMOVE WATER THAT COLLECTS IN THE TANK BOTTOM.
12. CORROSION IS PRIMARILY CAUSED BY BACTERIAL CONTAMINATION OF FUEL AND/OR CHLORIDES IN WATER ACCUMULATED IN THE TANK BOTTOM. INTERNAL CORROSION MAY BE CONTROLLED BY:
    i. INSPECTING & REMOVING ANY WATER THAT COLLECTS IN THE TANK BOTTOM; AND
    ii. ADDING BACTERICIDES TO THE FUEL AT DELIVERY.
13. TANKS MUST NOT BE DRAGGED OR DROPPED & ONLY MOVED WHEN EMPTY BY THE TANK HANDLES PROVIDED.
14. INSPECT TANK AT LEAST ANNUALLY. A QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN SHOULD DO ANY REQUIRED MAINTENANCE.
